MS Degree in Petroleum Engineering with Emphasis on Geoscience Technologies

09/03/2012

Prof. Ershaghi the director of Petroleum engineering program announces a new MS Degree in Petroleum Engineering with Emphasis on Geoscience Technologies. Recent developments in technologies for exploring, mapping and monitoring of unconventional and mature subterranean oil and gas resources and enhanced geothermal systems has generated substantial interest among graduate students and energy companies for a new emphasis area in our graduate professional MS degree program. Prof. Ershaghi maintains. The new MS degree is also designed for practicing engineers and scientists who enter petroleum engineering related fields and wish to obtain formal educational training and gain quantitative skills in the geoscience areas. The program is open to applicants with an undergraduate degree in engineering or physical sciences who meet the admission criteria.  In addition to the Petroleum Engineering core cores course and electives, the 4 required courses for this degree (12 units) include the three required courses:  PTE 502 Advanced Reservoir Characterization, PTE 503 Technology of Unconventional Oil and Gas Resources, and PTE 504 Geophysics for Petroleum Engineers,  with an additional course to be Selected  from the following: PTE 572 Geostatistics, PTE 505 Inverse Modeling for Dynamic Data Integration, PTE 506 Geothermal Reservoirs.
Geothermal Reservoirs (PTE506)  has been developed in conjunction with the USAID supported project, as a new graduate course to be be offered at USC. The main topics of this course includes Geothermal reservoirs, heat and mass flow in fracture network, enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), exploration methods, exploitation of hydrothermal and EGS fields, stimulation, forecasting, and power generation.
